The Educational Initiative on Constipation (EIC) is an integrated educational performance improvement activity that will allow all participants to access a variety of learning formats, tools, and best practice guidelines specific to the optimal care and management of patients with irritable bowel syndrome-constipation (IBS-C) and chronic constipation (CC).
Constipation is an extremely common complaint affecting millions of Americans each year. Although not generally life-threatening as a stand-alone condition, misdiagnosed or mistreated primary constipation has a severe impact on patient quality of life. In some patients, their constipation may be secondary to a more serious condition for which immediate referral is warranted. In both scenarios, the impact of a complaint of constipation on practices should not be under-estimated. As well as the burden on time and other resources spent recognizing and diagnosing its etiology, outcomes for those constipation patients who are not appropriately treated or referred may be adversely affected.
Successful recognition, diagnosis and management of the underlying cause of constipation initially is associated with better patient outcomes, and ultimately in savings of both clinic time and resources.
Join us for Primary Cares: Triaging Constipation Through a Performance Improvement Approach (The Performance Improvement Component of the Educational Initiative on Constipation), a highly innovative provider-based Performance Improvement component of the EIC where you will be guided along a process designed to increase the efficiency of the practice flow when faced with these patients.
Overall learning objectives of the EIC
At the completion of this educational activity, physicians, and nurse practitioners who treat patients with IBS-C and chronic constipation will be able to:
- Increase knowledge of underlying mechanisms central to chronic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C);
- Review clinical data relating to current and future therapies for IBS-C and chronic constipation;
- Implement diagnostic and management strategies for IBS-C and chronic constipation with appropriate utilization of diagnostic criteria and measures; and
- Increase provider competency, as it relates to diagnosing and managing the etiologies associated with constipation.
Specific Learning Objectives for the Performance Improvement Component
At the completion of participation in the performance improvement component, physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners who treat patients with IBS-C and chronic constipation will be able to:
- Improve recognition and diagnostic skills associated with a primary or secondary complaint of constipation;
- Improve the level of provider/patient communications as it relates to a diagnosis and management of chronic constipation;
- Utilize a multidisciplinary approach to chronic constipation management; and
- Increase provider competency, as it relates to diagnosing and managing the etiologies associated with constipation.
Intended audience
This activity is designed for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners that have participated in another component of The Educational Initiative on Constipation (EIC), including attendance of the American College of Gastroenterology 2008 Annual Scientific Meeting who treat individuals with IBS-C and chronic constipation.
